چکیده

Sydney, NSW 2109, Australia Abstract This paper explores a class of robust estimators of normal quantiles filling the gap between maximum likelihood estimators and empirical quantiles. Our estimators are linear combinations of M-estimators. Their asymptotic variances can be arbitrarily close to variances of the maximum likelihood estimators. Compared with empirical quantiles, the new estimators offer considerable reduction of variance at near normal probability distributions.

On M-estimators of Approximate Quantiles and Approximate Conditional Quantiles

M-estimators introduced in Huber (1964) provide a class of robust estimators of a center of symmetry of a symmetric probability distribution which also have very high eeciency at the model. However it is not clear what they do estimate when the probability distributions are nonsymmetric. In this paper we rst show that in the case of arbitrary, not necessarily symmetric probabilty distributions,...

Estimating a Bounded Normal Mean Under the LINEX Loss Function

Let X be a random variable from a normal distribution with unknown mean θ and known variance σ2. In many practical situations, θ is known in advance to lie in an interval, say [−m,m], for some m > 0. As the usual estimator of θ, i.e., X under the LINEX loss function is inadmissible, finding some competitors for X becomes worthwhile. The only study in the literature considered the problem of min...

Variance - Reduction Techniques for Estimating Quantiles and Value - at - Risk

VARIANCE-REDUCTION TECHNIQUES FOR ESTIMATING QUANTILES AND VALUE-AT-RISK by Fang Chu Quantiles, as a performance measure, arise in many practical contexts. In finance, quantiles are called values-at-risk (VARs), and they are widely used in the financial industry to measure portfolio risk. When the cumulative distribution function is unknown, the quantile can not be computed exactly and must be ...

Kernel Quantile Estimators

SUMMARY The estimation of population quantiles is of great interest when one is not prepared to assume a parametric form for the u.nderlying distribution. In addition, quantiles often arise as the natural thing to estimate when the underlying distribution is skewed. The sample quantile is a popular nonparametric estimator of the corresponding population quantile. Being a function of at most two...

Confidence Intervals Based On Survey Data With Nearest Neighbor Imputation

Nearest neighbor imputation (NNI) is a popular imputation method used to compensate for item nonresponse in sample surveys. Although previous results showed that the NNI sample mean and quantiles are consistent estimators of the population mean and quantiles, large sample inference procedures, such as asymptotic confidence intervals for the population mean and quantiles, are not available. For ...
